California Democrats Enter Final Push To Disarm Law-Abiding Teachers

California Democrats have now entered their final push to ensure that K-12 teachers will be unarmed if attacked in the classroom or on school grounds.

The push was launched via Democrat Assemblyman Kevin McCarty’s AB424, a bill that mandates that teachers with concealed-carry permits are not allowed to be armed on campus for defense of themselves or their students. Current law bans on-campus carry by teachers and staff except in districts where administrations have granted staff and teachers with concealed-carry permits the ability to carry.

Five districts currently allow teachers and/or staff to carry—Kern High School District, Kingsburg Joint Union High School District, Folsom Cordova Unified School District, Anderson Union High School District, and Palo Cedro’s North Cow Creek School District.

Aren’t the lives of children precious enough to protect? And how about the lives of teachers?AB424 was introduced in February, and on May 12 Breitbart News reported that McCarty framed the bill as a part of pursuing “a safe learning environment” for children. He did not list any examples of how teachers being armed for self-defense has contributed to unsafe learning environments, nor did he list any crimes or firearm-related incidents that have been attributed to armed teachers and/or staff. (McCarty could not list crimes or firearm-related incidents because there have not been any.)

Moreover, McCarty did not explain how a Sandy Hook-like environment—an environment where teachers are defenseless—can be equated with a “safe learning environment.” After all, the teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary had no means to protect themselves or their students when an attacker ignored the gun-free designations, entered the building, and opened fire.

Aren’t the lives of children precious enough to protect?

And how about the lives of teachers?

Despite the self-evident answers to these questions, McCarty and his fellow Democrats are moving full steam ahead in their push to be sure teachers cannot shoot back if attacked. AB424 passed in the Assembly on June 19 and is now ready for a final floor vote in the California Senate.

In the end, McCarty’s bill is a solution looking for a problem. In reality, it might be a solution that causes a problem …The push to disarm teachers enjoys the support of Michael Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action, the same group that opposes allowing women with concealed-carry permits to be armed on college campuses for self-defense.

AB424 is opposed by the California Rifle and Pistol Association, the Firearms Policy Coalition, and Republicans like Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez. CBS News reported that Melendez voted against McCarty’s bill and explained her vote by saying:

“Those who have been deemed responsible enough to have a (concealed-carry weapon) ought to be able to have one on school grounds if their school district allows it. It is not our responsibility to make that decision for them.”

In the end, McCarty’s bill is a solution looking for a problem. In reality, it might be a solution that causes a problem—since it places teachers in a position where they cannot defend themselves or their students should an attack occur.

Whether one looks at Chicago, Baltimore, or San Francisco—gun control bastions all—the lesson is the same: Gun control does not make the vulnerable less vulnerable, only more so. It does this by placing the burden of law on them; a burden that they obey but criminals ignore.

In other words, gun-free zones are only gun-free for the law-abiding.
