Unsurprising: Study Shows Criminals Don’t Buy Their Guns Legally

For all of the talk from the anti-gun communists in this country, who want to infringe on the rights of the people to keep and bear arms by pushing unlawful regulations and restrictions, this study should be the rays of sunshine and disinfectant to their lies… but they’ll ignore it. A recent study proves that Chicago criminals did not acquire their guns through lawful purchases at gun stores, gun shows or the internet.

The Chicago Sun Times reports:

In a survey of almost 100 detainees in the Cook County Jail, few said they get firearms at gun shows or through the Internet, said Harold Pollack, co-director of the crime lab. They also said they don’t normally steal guns or buy them at a licensed store.

“Some of the pathways people are concerned about don’t seem so dominant,” Pollack said.

Most of the inmates said they had a gun within six months of getting locked up. And most said they got the weapons through personal connections because they feared getting caught in a law-enforcement sting or being robbed by a stranger.

That’s not all. Pollack said that these men were not as concerned about getting caught with the guns as they were being in a position of not being able to defend themselves.

“Many gave some version of the phrase ‘I’d rather be judged by 12 than be carried by six.’ ” Pollack said. “We have to figure out swift and certain but not overly severe consequences for getting caught with a gun that are meaningful to the perpetrators that might consider carrying them.”

Frankly, I don’t blame anyone for obtaining a weapon to protect themselves no matter what illegal gun laws are passed. The desire to defend yourself is greater than the desire to follow pretended legislation.

However, when used in the commission of a crime, that is another story.

Researcher Alisu Schoua-Glusberg, who conducted the interviews with the men in the fall of 2013, said that 70 percent of them obtained their guns “family, fellow gang members or through other social connections.” Just two of the men claimed to have purchased their weapons via a gun store.

One thing I have pointed out previously is that there were only a few who actually claimed to use “military-style assault weapons” in the commission of a crime. Even in using such guns, they would seek to get rid of the gun within a year due to “legal liability” of being caught with a gun that had been used by someone else in a previous crime. Most of these convicts preferred handguns with magazines that would hold 30 rounds or more.

So, all of the talk about gun laws and more background checks are really, in truth, only for the law-abiding citizen and have virtually no effect on criminals. Granted, this survey was conducted in Chicago, but human nature is the same across the board. So, it is safe to say this is going on all across the country and the only people being stifled in the exercise of their rights to obtain, keep and bear arms are law abiding people. This is exactly why government was given no authority to infringe on those rights at all.
