Hollywood is taking story ideas from none other than Everytown for Gun Safety.

The media outlet of record for Hollywood,Variety, recently reported that Hollywood is getting a lot chummier with gun control groups like Everytown for Gun Safety and the Brady Campaign these days. Yes, the entertainment industry has long been full of celebrities who are happy to show up for whatever anti-gun gala is thrown together, but more and more we’re seeing overt promotion of gun control groups in the actual creative product.

A recent Comedy Central sketch by Amy Schumer, for instance, promoted a real phone number for people to call Everytown for Gun Safety. Similarly, a recent episode of “House of Cards” promoted a website that linked to (you guessed it) Everytown for Gun Safety. The CBS drama “The Good Wife” partnered with the Brady Campaign. And there’ll be plenty of more examples in the weeks and months to come.

In siding with the anti-gun activists, these Hollywood “artists” are deciding that some stories are worth telling, even if you have to make them up. Meanwhile, real stories like the one about the mom in Indianapolis who defended herself and her baby from an intruder, or the 80-year-old Washington state woman who shot an intruder who had stabbed her 75-year-old husband, aren’t reported in the national media and will never show up in fictionalized form on a television crime drama—unless the 80-year-old woman is fictionalized into becoming a
murderous grandmother. This isn’t art. It’s not even very good propaganda, to be honest. It’s what happens when the independent creative voice becomes less important than advancing an agenda.

This isn’t art. It’s not even very good propaganda, to be honest. It’s what happens when the independent creative voice becomes less important than advancing an agenda—when social causes like gun control become just another version of product placement. I imagine the anti-gun producers, screenwriters and stars of these programs would much rather have some of their ideology blatantly inserted into the program than their character suddenly developing a taste for a particular soda or yogurt. If you the consumer are bothered by this, feel free to change the channel.

Hollywood refuses to recognize that many of us are, in fact, doing just that. There’s a nearly unlimited amount of entertainment options available to us, and we’re taking advantage of it. In fact, the next time you see some bit of anti-gun propaganda in your favorite TV show, turn it off and check out nranews.com and some of the amazing programming we have to offer. There are plenty of compelling stories and characters, without any anti-gun attitudes.
