Smith & Wesson is no stranger to the concealed-carry market, having topped sales with in-demand options like the M&P Shield Plus, M&P Shield EZ and the all-metal CSX. The company’s latest option, the Smith & Wesson Equalizer, is designed to combine class-leading features into one capable defensive platform that provides capacity, ease of use and versatility.

“The EQUALIZER is a total package micro-compact pistol. Its multi-purpose design allows for a variety of set-up options for use at the range and/or for personal carry, while not compromising on firepower or comfort,” said John Myles, senior manager of new products.

Chambered in 9 mm Luger, the internal-hammer-fired Smith & Wesson Equalizer combines the latest evolution of the company’s unique EZ technology, making the gun easy to manipulate for users with weaker hand strength. Alongside the ease of handling, a lowered recoil impulse also provides a controllable platform for personal defense. Capacity has also been expanded over previous EZ platforms, with the Equalizer compatible with 10-, 13- and 15-round magazines. The gun measures 6.75″ long, 4.5″ high (with a flush-fit magazine) and 1.04″ wide and weighs 22.9 ozs., unloaded, with an empty 13-round magazine installed.

Capability and versatility don’t end there, though, as the Smith & Wesson Equalizer also features a single-action trigger that provides a clean break and a short reset point for improved accuracy and faster follow-up shorts, respectively. At the top of the gun, you’ll find a stainless-steel 3.675″ barrel that not only provides a little bump in the way of velocity, it also requires a slightly longer slide than many micro-compacts on the market, which means that there’s a longer sight radius, thereby improving precision and accuracy. That doesn’t mean users have to stick with open sights, though. Smith & Wesson developed an all-new optic-cut pattern that allows owners to mount their preferred micro red-dot.

Other features found on the new Smith & Wesson Equalizer include an all-new grip texture that improves carry comfort while ensuring control during firing, as well as a Picatinny rail on the frame for accessories. The Equalizer is also outfitted with slide serrations at the front and rear, and you’ll find the grip safety retained from earlier versions of the M&P Shield EZ. Versions are also available with or without a manual thumb safety, and the single-sided magazine release is reversible. Each Equalizer ships with a Maglula UpLula loading tool.
