Kark Rove Claims that Repealing the Second Amendment Could Guarantee No More Gun Violence

The man that the media likes to call the brain behind the George W. Bush Presidency, Karl Rove, said something astonishing on Sunday while discussing the tragic events that took place in Charleston, South Carolina earlier this week. While part of a panel on Fox News Sunday, Rove said there was no easy answer to stopping violence like racist Dylann Roof wrought in Mother Emanuel AME church this past week, but then seemed to suggest that repealing the 2nd Amendment might be one way to do it.

Some of his defenders are saying that this is not at all what he meant, but it sure seemed that way to me. Listen for yourself and you tell us what you think.

Chris Wallace: How do we stop the violence?

Karl Rove: “I wish I had an easy answer for that, but I don’t think there’s an easy answer. We saw an act of evil. Racist, bigoted evil, and to me the amazing thing is that it was met with grief and love. Think about how far we’ve come since 1963. The whole weight of the government throughout the South was to impede finding and holding and bringing to justice the men who perpetrated the [Birmingham] bombing.

And here, we saw an entire state, an entire community, an entire nation come together, grieving as one and united in the belief that this was an evil act, so we’ve come a long way.

Now maybe there’s some magic law that will keep us from having more of these. I mean basically the only way to guarantee that we will dramatically reduce acts of violence involving guns is to basically remove guns from society, and until somebody gets enough “oomph” to repeal the Second Amendment, that’s not going to happen.

I don’t think that’s an answer…”

Rove’s defenders are pointing to that last line in particular as the proof that he’s not actually advocating repealing the 2nd Amendment, but is he saying that taking our guns isn’t an answer or that repealing the 2nd isn’t possible. I just can’t tell. I do know that the paragraph beforehand is entirely devoted to arguing that the only way to stop gun violence is to repeal the 2nd Amendment and that is disconcerting enough for me. I am already wary of Rove for other reasons… this is just adding fuel to the anti-Rove fire.
