Idaho-based Tactical Solutions manufactured accessories for a variety of popular .22 rimfire rifles, Browning and Ruger semi-auto rimfire handguns, rimfire conversions for Glock pistols and suppressors. The company also makes complete firearms. One of these is the Owhyee bolt-action takedown, a .22 LR long gun that takes its name from the tributary of the Snake River. For 2023, Tactical Solutions is offering a .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) version of the Owyhee.

With the barrel removed from the receiver, the Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock allows the Owyhee to be stored as a compact package.

Harkening back to the Air Force’s M4 survival rifle and ArmaLite’s original takedown rifle, the AR-5, the Owyhee (Tactical Solutions clarifies that the name is pronounced “oh-WYE-hee”) is currently the only bolt-action takedown rimfire rifle on the market. The rifle uses an anodized aluminum alloy receiver and trigger housing, stainless steel bolt and, to maximize weight savings, a barrel that uses a chrome-moly steel liner within an aluminum sleeve. The trigger unit is proprietary, with a crossbolt safety mounted on the rear of the trigger guard.

The Owyhee is marketed as a rifle perfect for backpacking, hunting, plinking and target shooting.

The magazine is a 10/22-pattern rotary, detachable box and is released by an extended lever. The Owyhee uses a modified Magpul X-22 Backpacker stock that has internal storage spaces in the grip and comb areas. Takedown is accomplished by pushing a button in the stock, which allows for the barrel to rotate and be disengaged from the receiver. When disassembled, the fore-end and barrel assembly clips into the buttstock for a compact and secure package.

The Owyhee Magnum is a .22 WMR version of the Owyhee bolt action take down rifle that Tactical Solutions introduced in 2020.

The standard Owyhee, in both .22 LR and .22 WMR, have the muzzles of their 0.920″-diameter, 16.5″ barrels threaded 1/2×28 TPI for attaching a compensator or suppressor and have adjustable front and rear sights with fiber-optic inserts. They are also drilled and tapped for receiver-mounted optics.

The SBX model is designed to maintain a 16″ overall length for the barrel, even when a suppressor is not attached.

The SBX models are the only takedown rifles currently on the market specifically designed for a suppressor. The 12.38″ barrel has a permanently attached shroud for a total length of 16.63″. A suppressor up to 1” in diameter fits inside this shroud. This design allows the rifle to maintain a compact profile with the suppressor attached, even when taken down. The SBX models do not come with sights, but the .22 WMR SBX comes with a receiver-mounted Picatinny rail for mounting optics.

The extended barrel shroud on the SBX model will allow a suppressor of up to 1″ in diameter to be attached to the muzzle of the barrel.

The .22 WMR versions of the Owyhee come in at just a few ounces heavier than their .22 LR siblings, with a total weight of 4.1 lbs. for the standard model and 3.9 lbs. for the SBX, and their barrels have a 1:14″ twist rate. They feed from a Ruger 10/22 Magnum-pattern magazine and a nine-round rotary box is provided.

With it’s unique short barrel and permanently attached shroud design, the SBX allows for a compact overall length with a suppressor attached.

With the .22 Magnum providing more than double the energy of the .22 LR from a 16.63″ barrel (the same holds true for the SBX’s 12″ effective barrel length), the Owyhee Magnum ups the performance of a takedown survival rifle, or as Tactical Solutions says, provides “magnum power in a compact and portable package” with the reliability and accuracy of a bolt-action platform. The Tactical Solutions .22 Magnum Owyhee Takedown has an MSRP of $1,350 for the standard model and $1,399 for the SBX model.

The Owyhee Magnum offers the accuracy and reliability of a bolt-action, plus magnum rimfire power, to the takedown rifle world.
