A 55-year-old man is in the hospital after being shot by an armed homeowner during a break-in attempt in Morehead City, N.C., on Oct. 11, 2023.
Just after 3 p.m., police officers responded to a call of shots fired at the homeowner’s residence. There, they discovered that the 55-year-old suspect had forced his way into the house, where he encountered the homeowner armed with a pistol. The armed citizen opened fire, forcing the man to flee from the house. After exiting the building, the man stole the resident’s car and fled.

He was later apprehended after officers conducted a traffic stop and found the wounded man in the vehicle. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for a single gunshot wound. He faces multiple charges, including breaking and entering, domestic criminal trespass and larceny of a motor vehicle. (News 12; Carteret County, N.C.; 10/11/23)

Suspicious of two men claiming to be electric company representatives come to check wiring in her Joliet, Ill., home, Mrs. Velma Nelson refused to let them enter. The men then tried to barge through the door, but Mrs. Nelson snatched up a rifle and threatened to shoot if they didn’t leave. The assailants hesitated briefly, then fled.
