A homeowner in Bedford County, Pa., defended himself from an alleged home invader who attacked him inside his home on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022.
Around 3 a.m. that morning, the homeowner became aware of an intrusion into his residence and dialed 911. While on the phone with authorities, the 72-year-old homeowner encountered the intruder, who attacked him. During the struggle, the call dropped and the homeowner was injured, but he managed to pull out a firearm and shoot his assailant.

After opening fire, the intruder was subdued, and the call with authorities reconnected, at which time the homeowner reported the shooting. When police later arrived on scene, they discovered the 22-year-old intruder, who died from his wounds. The homeowner was taken to a local medical center to treat wounds sustained during the assault. Samuel Waterhus was returning from a hunting trip when he noticed two burglars in his Spokane, Wash., house. Grabbing his shotgun, Waterhus captured one suspect and held him at gunpoint. A second suspect was later arrested by sheriff’s deputies. Both men were booked on charges of second-degree burglary. (The Chronicle, Spokane, Wash.)
