An alleged attacker is wounded and in custody in Memphis, Tenn., after encountering an armed shop owner willing to protect his life and the lives of his patrons.

Just after 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2023, a 21-year-old man drew his firearm and attempted a carjacking, telling the driver to “leave it running, I’m taking it.” The driver was allowed to leave. The 21-year-old suspect then entered a nearby shoe-shine business, gun in hand. When he entered the door, the shop owner drew a firearm and shot at the 21-year-old alleged assailant, hitting the man in the arm and causing him to stumble out the door and seek help at a nearby church.

Police apprehended the wounded attacker, who is currently being held on a $20,000 bond and is charged with four counts of aggravated assault. “We as a people have to get together and police our own neighborhood,” the shop owner remarked. (WREG Memphis; Memphis, Tenn.; 5/28/23)

Buffalo, N.Y., welfare worker Mary Guidice was working at her desk in the Rath County Office Building when a recipient, enraged by the news that he would have to fill out some forms to receive benefits, began beating a welfare examiner. Guidice pulled her licensed pistol and subdued the attacker. (The Evening News; Buffalo, N.Y.)
