A lawfully armed tow truck driver responded to a shooter at the scene of a vehicle accident in Chicago, Ill., on Oct. 3, 2023.

That afternoon, a Chicago city bus was involved in a crash with four other vehicles in the city’s Archer Heights neighborhood. According to eyewitness reports, more than a dozen people got out of the vehicles and were surveying the crash when an unknown suspect in a white Dodge Durango opened fire on the crowd, hitting a 55-year-old CTA bus supervisor. The armed assailant allegedly aimed toward a tow-truck driver, who was lawfully carrying a concealed handgun. The driver drew his gun and opened fire on the individual in the Durango, and the vehicle left the scene.

Police confirmed that a witness with a concealed-carry license fired back at the shooter. They also indicated that the bus supervisor was apparently not the intended target of the shooter and that the man was in stable condition at a local hospital. No suspects were in custody at the time of this writing. (ABC7; Chicago, Ill.; 10/3/23)

In his 18 years of operating his Chicago tavern, John Fahey has killed 3 bandits and wounded 5 others. The 70-year-old saloon keeper thwarted a recent holdup by grabbing a 1917 Colt revolver, one of six guns he keeps in hidden spots behind the bar, and shooting a would-be robber who came in at closing time and said, “This is a stickup!” (Chicago Sun Times)
