A fisherman trekking into the Tom Miner Basin of Montana was charged by an adult male grizzly bear, forcing him to open fire to defend his life and that of his fellow angler on Aug. 30, 2023.

The two were walking through dense undergrowth when the charge occurred. The armed angler was able to draw, shoot and stop the grizzly’s attack, and the two suffered no injuries during the encounter. The latest incident comes on the heels of another grizzly attack, in which two men killed a bear in self-defense near White Lodge, Mont. Yet another Montana man shot and killed an aggressive black bear near Red Lodge.

Montana’s Fish, Wildlife and Parks department is warning outdoor enthusiasts that the state “is bear country” and to prepare for a possible encounter while taking steps to reduce the likelihood of confronting a bear. “Grizzly bear populations continue to become denser and more widespread in Montana, increasing the likelihood that residents and recreationists will encounter them in more places each year,” the state’s release said. Police summoned to Ernest Carter’s Middetown, Ohio, grocery found Carter and clerk Junior Langworthy sitting on a suspected robber. They said the suspect entered the store and pointed a pistol at Carter. Langworthy picked up a shotgun and covered him. The two then disarmed the suspect and sat on him until officers arrived.
