A 36-year-old intruder with a criminal record ended up in jail once again after meeting an armed homeowner in Neptune Beach, Fla., on July 19, 2023.
According to police, the alleged intruder forced his way through the back door of the elderly couple’s home in an attempt to rob the place. Once inside, he was surprised to find the homeowner, who had retrieved a gun and held him at gunpoint until police arrived. The suspect was arrested and charged with second-degree forcible felony for burglary.

Neptune Beach Police applauded the homeowner’s efforts and published the following statement: “We are committed, dedicated, and ready to protect our community and its residence [sic]. We are also thankful of this brave homeowner’s actions and that the incident didn’t end much worse than it could have. While rare in our community, heinous crimes like this can and do still occur. We highly encourage all of our citizens to practice home safety, invest in security measures such as cameras, and always call us if you ever believe there is a problem.” (News4Jax; Neptune Beach, Fla.; 7/19/23)

Howard R. Shisim, who lives behind his Battle Creek, Mich., grocery store was awakened in the early morning hours by noises coming from the store. Grabbing a pistol, he went to investigate. Encountering two men, Chisim ordered them back into the store, made them deposit their loot on the counter and then marched them into the walk-in cooler to await the arrival of the police.
