Sunday evening, a 27-year-old woman was delivering pizzas in DeKalb County Georgia when a man told her to get on the ground and threatened her with a gun. She didn’t take kindly to that and pulled out her own gun, blasting the bad guy in the face.

DeKalb County Police Department Capt. Stephen Fore told WSB-TV, “She arrived at the location and a male began approaching the vehicle she thought was there to pick up the pizza. When he got to her, he produced a handgun and forced her out of the vehicle and onto the ground.”

Once on the ground, she was able to grab her gun and shoot the suspect.

According to Capt. Fore, “She felt she had no other choice.”

The Papa John’s employee wasn’t injured, according to her mother, but was worried at the time that she might lose her job because she defended herself with her own gun.

Donquaz Devon Stevenson, 24, was found near the scene with a gunshot wound to the face. He was arrested and charged with armed robbery.

A second suspect stole the delivery driver’s silver 2000 Honda Accord and was still at large on Monday. If you have any information that could lead to the arrest of the second suspect, you are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.

The good news is that the young woman will keep her job, though Papa John’s has said that it will not be changing its policy that prohibits employees from using guns.

A Papa John’s spokesperson emailed a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution stating:

Upon investigation and considering the specific facts of the situation, we have reassigned the employee to work in the store and are offering her counseling to help her recuperate from the incident.

Papa Johns also stated that the safety of their employees is a top priority. I could ask if that is the case, then why prohibit them from carrying their own guns? However, I think, as demonstrated in this instance, that they don’t want to be seen as encouraging employees to be seen with guns inside Papa John’s, but clearly are standing behind employees who use their guns lawfully to defend themselves.

I’m glad the company is standing behind their employee in this instance and not firing her. That says a lot. That’s more than I can say for Pizza Hut, who demoted a Maryland delivery man after he used a tent pole to defend himself against five attackers, one that had already sucker punched him.

Food delivery jobs are considered to be one of the ten most dangerous jobs in the US. I think every delivery person should be allowed to be armed to protect themselves.

Clearly if Papa John’s would market this correctly, they would do well: “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza, Armed Drivers… Papa John’s.”
