First Look: American Eagle 30 Super Carry FMJ

Even though the 30 Super Carry cartridge is still quite new, Federal is offering a load that is ideal for training and informal practice. This new cartridge is an ideal companion to Federal’s other offerings which stress self-defense.

Sold under the American Eagle brand, the new 30 Super Carry load uses a full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet instead of a hollowpoint common to premium self-defense ammunition. The American Eagle FMJ bullet weighs 100-grains and is rated at 1,250 fps at the muzzle. This is the same bullet weight and rated velocity as the new HST load launched by Federal. This means the American Eagle load should closely duplicate the ballistic performance of the HST round. Check your pistol for a change in the target impacts, but the American Eagle load should be an ideal training round for anyone carrying the HST load.

For those still learning about the 30 Super Carry cartridge, it is a new handgun round that was introduced in early 2022. It was designed to offer good performance in a narrower round that would allow for more cartridges in 9mm-sized magazine. For example, the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus pistol will hold 13 rounds in a standard magazine while the 9mm version of the same gun will hold only 10 rounds.

“The 30 Super Carry fills a big gap in handgun cartridges,” said Chris Laack, Federal’s Handgun Ammunition Product Manager. “This new cartridge offers a significant terminal performance boost over the 380 Auto with as much muzzle energy as a 9mm Luger. Users will see performance similar to 9mm Luger with slightly less recoil and additional magazine capacity.”

Federal will sell the American Eagle 30 Super Carry FMJ load in boxes containing 50 cartridges. The suggested retail price of a single box is $31.99. For additional information on the American Eagle cartridge visit federalpremium.com.
