New For 2023: Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Magnum
Smith & Wesson has been on a bit of a tear this year when it comes to releasing new products. In addition to updates to its M&P rifle and handgun line, the company has introduced two new and unique models that were outside the typical S&W box—the folding FPC carbine and the M&P 5.7 pistol. To that list, add a third—the Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Magnum.
The M&P 22 Magnum is a polymer-framed, semi-automatic pistol chambered in the rimfire .22 WMR cartridge. The pistol uses the Tempo gas-operated, rotary locking action originally developed for the M&P 5.7. It is fired by an internal hammer and has a flat-faced trigger and manual safety. Both the safety and slide-stop levers are bilateral, and the magazine release is reversible for left-handed operation.
Its stainless-steel slide and 4.35” stainless-steel barrel have an Armornite finish. The pistol uses dovetail-mounted sights, with a fiber-optic front and notched rear. The slide is also cut for a direct mount of optics that use the Shield RMSc footprint. The frame’s dust cover has a four-slot Picatinny rail for mounting accessories.

The M&P 22 Magnum uses a 30-round magazine, two of which are supplied with the pistol. As semi-auto rimfires are known to be picky eaters, Smith & Wesson has thoroughly tested the new M&P with a variety of ammunition and has signed off on 14 cartridges with bullet weights from 30 grains to 50 grains that the pistol feeds reliably. Among them are popular .22 WMR loads, including Speer Gold Dots and CCI Maxi Mags.
