Springfield Armory entered the double-stack M1911-style handgun market in a big way with its 1911 DS Prodigy, and now, there are four new models of the Prodigy, all of which feature a coyote-brown finish. The slide and frame are finished with a coyote-brown Cerakote finish, and the polymer grip module features a matching coyote-brown color. Black accents are found throughout the gun, notably on the AOS optics system cover plate, barrel, bilateral thumb safety, trigger, magazine release, slide-stop lever, hammer and beavertail grip safety.

All four models in the coyote-brown Springfield Armory Prodigy lineup are chambered for 9 mm Luger. A full-size version with a 5″ barrel is available, as well as a compact model with a 4.25″ barrel. Additionally, two separate models for states with magazine-capacity restrictions will also be available, one full-size and one compact. The low-capacity models will ship with two magazines that are restricted to 10 rounds each. Standard-capacity models will ship with one 17-round magazine and one 20-round magazine.

A forward view of the Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy.

One of the salient features of the Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy is its use of the Agency Optic System. Without an optic mounted, a black cover plate utilizes a dovetailed rear sight. Removing the cover plate reveals a footprint compatible with a number of adapter plates, and a single Shield RMSc-compatible plate ships with each Prodigy. Additional optic plates are available through Springfield Armory’s store, including models that accommodate TrijiconLeupoldAimpoint and Holosun red-dot optics.

In American Rifleman’s Dope Bag review (read here), our evaluator found that the Prodigy “…is more than ready for competition or self-defense” and that “the Prodigy’s solid, hand-filling grip, weight and superb balance made one- and two-hand shooting simple and comfortable.” Pricing on Springfield’s coyote-brown models of the Prodigy is $1,549.
