Roseburg Citizens Shock State of Oregon by Doing This Following Last Week’s Shooting
Amazingly, the residents of Roseburg, Oregon are not attacking the Second Amendment nor are they blaming guns for the deaths of nine people at Umpqua Community College last week. Rather, it seem that they are rallying around the Second Amendment and pointing out the fact that the murders are evidence of why there should not be Gun Free Zones and that citizens should be armed for self-defense.
The Associated Press reports:
Hunting deer, elk and bear in the surrounding hills and fishing for salmon and steelhead have strong followings in southern Oregon’s timber country, made famous by Western writer Zane Gray, who counted the North Umpqua River his favorite place to fish.
So does support for the right to own and carry a gun.
“I carry to protect myself — the exact same reason this happened,” said Casey Runyan, referring to the deadly shootings Thursday at Umpqua Community College. Runyan carries a Glock 29 automatic pistol everywhere he goes.
“All my friends agree with me. That’s the only kind of friends I have,” said Runyan, a disabled Marine Corps veteran who says he carried a machine gun in the infantry in Iraq.
The county’s top law enforcement officer, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, spoke out against state and federal gun-control legislation last year, telling a legislative committee that mandating background checks for private, person-to-person gun sales would not prevent criminals from getting firearms.
Hanlin also sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden in 2013, after the shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school. Hanlin said he and his deputies would refuse to enforce new gun-control restrictions “offending the constitutional rights of my citizens.”
Sheriff Hanlin is not the only one who has stood up against gun control laws in Oregon. In April, Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel told the media that his office would not be enforcing new state gun laws, but would instead ignore them. He follows in the footsteps of his predecessor Sheriff Gil Gilbertson, who previously wrote a letter to Joe Biden and told him, “Any rule, regulation, or executive order repugnant to the constitutional rights of the citizens of this County will be ignored by this office.”

AWR Hawkins added, “Roseburg sits in Douglas County, where Sheriff John Hanlin drew attention to himself by fighting an expansion of gun control in 2014. He fought hard against expanded background checks–gun control’s Trojan Horse–even sending a letter to Vice President Joe Biden expressing his conviction that the laws being pushed were “offending the constitutional rights of [Douglas County] citizens.”
The AP also added that a retired US Army nurse and internet talk show host chose Douglas County for retirement based on their low crime rate and strong support for the rights protected under the First and Second Amendments.
One other person, J. C. Smith said that Gun Free Zones opened the door for attacks like the one last week.
“With current world events, (armed people) would keep the ground safer,” he said.
So, how does the school feel about all of this?
Interim President Rita Cavin claimed that the incident was an “anomaly and a tragedy.” She added that because they have a policy of no guns on campus, they didn’t believe an armed security presence was needed.
Of course, the incident is an anomaly. People aren’t being shot and murdered on the college campus every day, but that is the point of being armed and prepared to deal with it when it occurs, and why state sponsored schools and colleges believe they have the right to infringe on the rights of their students is beyond me. At least there are some sane people there in Oregon who have the right idea to help prevent further “anomalies” from occurring in the future.
Could it be that people are actually waking up to the fact that the media and the government are working together to disarm them and they are seeing the reality of what that means? I think that is a very likely scenario.
