Shannon Watts Says You Aren’t A “Caring” American

The gun control movement has been failing for decades, and the desperation of those involved is becoming more evident every day. From hiding behind the poll-tested phrase “gun safety,” to their empty words of support for the Second Amendment, they seek to rebuild their tired and tattered movement in a country with record number of concealed-carry permit holders, tens of millions of gun owners, and an army of grassroots activists committed to protecting and strengthening our right to keep and bear arms. They’re not anti-gun, they claim. In fact, they insist they actually love the Second Amendment. They just want some “common-sense gun safety measures” that won’t impact your right to keep and bear arms at all.

Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action has taken this absurd argument to extraordinary new heights by proclaiming that the “life or death fight about gun safety” is between two opposing views: “caring people” versus “the gun lobby.” In trying to seize the moral high ground, Watts has now decided to demonize anyone and everyone opposed to the Bloomberg-backed gun control movement. Individuals like Kimberly Corban, Amanda Collins, Kristi McMains and the other women who’ve courageously spoken up in support of the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense after being physically assaulted by strangers are tarred as “uncaring” by Watts and the anti-gun crowd. Veteran law enforcement officers like Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and Deputy Michelle Carlino-Webster of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office aren’t individuals who care about their communities, at least not to Shannon Watts. They must be part or pawns of the “gun lobby.” The same goes for veterans like Medal of Honor Recipient Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha, Folds of Honor’s Maj. Ed Pulido, and the countless men and women who’ve served and sacrificed while wearing the uniforms of our armed forces and who now speak up in defense of our Second Amendment rights. According to Watts, these heroes must’ve stopped caring when they ended their active-duty service. They, too, are just part of the uncaring horde of Americans known as “the gun lobby.” In trying to seize the moral high ground, Watts has now decided to demonize anyone and everyone opposed to the Bloomberg-backed gun control movement.

It’s a stupid argument, and one that should be mocked at every opportunity. There’s no moral high ground in trying to make it harder for people to exercise their right of self-defense. There’s no moral high ground in denying individuals the ability to carry when they need to protect themselves with a gun. There’s no moral high ground in hiding an anti-gun agenda in meaningless buzzwords like “common sense” and “gun safety.” There’s no moral high ground in calling on politicians to “do something” about violent crime, especially if the something that’s done targets legal gun owners, not violent criminals.

If Shannon Watts wants to talk about “caring,” maybe she can explain why anti-gun groups like Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action don’t seem to care when a straw purchaser gets probation, when a drug trafficker walks away from a third conviction with a slap on the wrist and goes on to shoot a cop, or when violent felons get a plea deal that puts them back on the street before their victims have even recovered from their injuries. The “caring” anti-gun activists don’t seem to care about women defending themselves with firearms, or homeowners protecting their kids, or the elderly saving themselves from violent attacks.

Well, we gun owners do care. We don’t love the Second Amendment more than we love our families. We zealously guard our right to keep and bear arms because we love our families. I’m grateful to live in a country where I can protect the people that I care about, and I’m proud to be a part of a movement that will never stop fighting until that right is secure for every law-abiding American across the country.
