California: Fish and Game Commission Rejects Bear Ban Petition
On Thursday, the California Fish and Game Commission held a meeting and rejected Petition 2021-027, a request made by the Humane Society to eliminate the black bear hunting season under the pretext of the black bear population being vulnerable and needing further study.
Thankfully, the commission disagreed with the anti-hunting petition, stating that:
“Our best available science, from multiple lines of evidence, points to an abundant and stable black bear population. Hunting affects only a small fraction of that population and serves as a management tool to provide key population monitoring data that cannot be easily obtained otherwise.”
