First Look: Fiocchi 5.7x28mm Subsonic Ammunition
With major gun manufacturers such as Ruger, Fabrique National (FN), Palmetto State Armory and Smith & Wesson all selling various semiautomatic handgun models that are chambered for the 5.7x28mm cartridge, ammunition companies are also responding and ramping their offerings to better cater to 5.7x28mm shooters.

The 5.7x28mm cartridge was a product of the early 1990s requirement for a round that defeat body armor. Originally designed by FN, this .22-caliber cartridge came to existence after NATO authorities expressed the desire for an alternative to the 9mm round. Belgian engineers applied the same “small caliber, high velocity” concept as the 5.56 NATO rifle cartridge, but in a smaller format. While the 5.7x28mm and 5.56 NATO may somewhat resemble each other due to their bottleneck casing, the 5.7 cartridge was created from the ground up by FN. In contrast to the new Fiocchi subsonic Range Dynamics load that has a 62-grain projectile, a standard 5.7 cartridge has a projectiles with approximately half of that weight, giving these rounds a muzzle velocities of around 2,350 feet per second.
