Mossberg has begun chambering its Patriot bolt-action rifle in 400 Legend. Pairing impressive down-range penetration with extremely low recoil, the 400 Legend is ideal for straight-wall states, and can be used for a variety of big game, including hogs and close-cover bears. A walnut-stocked version and black synthetic stock option, both with 20-inch threaded, matte blue barrels, are currently available. Length of pull on both models is 13.75 inches and overall length sits at 40.25 inches. The synthetic, however, is a little lighter, tipping the scales at 6.5 pounds, to the walnut’s 7 pounds.

Based on Mossberg’s twin-lug push-feed machined-steel action, these classically-styled Patriot rifles are fed from a flush-fit polymer magazine with a 4+1 capacity. The free-floating, 20-inch carbon steel barrels are threaded to 11/16-24 TPI for the easy addition of a suppressor or muzzle brake. These barrels include a protective thread cap; and have an 11-degree match crown. For easily mounting a scope, the Patriot comes with weaver-styles bases. All Patriot rifles feature Mossberg’s patented LBA (Lightning Bolt Action) user-adjustable trigger with a 2- to 7-pound range of adjustment, with a crisp break at every weight. Rounding out these rifles are streamlined and checkered bolt handles; spiral-fluted bolts; and sling-swivel studs.

Introduced by Winchester Ammunition earlier this year, the 400 Legend is a straight-walled cartridge described as having energy equivalent to the 450 Bushmaster but with 20-percent less recoil; 20-percent more energy than the .30-30 Winchester; 25-percent more energy than the 350 Legend with greater penetration; and 100-percent more energy than a 12-gauge slug at 100 yards with 55-percent less recoil. This versatile cartridge provides deep penetration and efficient knockdown power for medium- to big-game animals at mid ranges of 200 to 250 yards.
