On the heels of the company’s announcement of its new coyote-brown 1911 DS ProdigySpringfield Armory announced yet another expansion of its Prodigy handgun lineup, with two new models available with an integral compensator located at the muzzle. The single-port compensator is machined into the barrel and slide, ensuring that shooters get the benefits of reduced muzzle rise without added length or weight on the pistol.

Springfield Armory’s new 1911 DS Prodigy Comp is available in a full-size design with a 5″ bull barrel and a five-slot Picatinny accessory rail or a compact model featuring a 4.25″ bull barrel and a single-slot Picatinny accessory rail on the frame. Both guns are all-black with stainless-steel barrels, and the pistols are also equipped with the Agency Optic System that accommodates a range of today’s micro red-dot sights. The guns ship with a cover plate that incorporates a dovetailed rear sight, and a single Shield RMSc adapter plate comes with the gun. Plates compatible with other optic footprints are available on Springfield Armory’s website.

To date, all of Springfield Armory’s 1911 DS Prodigy models are chambered in 9 mm Luger, and they feed from all 2011-compatible double-stack magazines. A 17-round flush-fit magazine and an extended 20-round magazine ship with each gun. Certain capacity-restricted models are also available for those who live in states that limit magazine capacity.

Fans of the M1911 design will find a lot to like in the Springfield Prodigy, from the bilateral thumb safeties to the clean, single-action trigger to the skeletonized hammer. A generously sized and well-fitted frame beavertail protects the web of a shooter’s hand from the hammer and slide during cycling. A push-button magazine release and slide-stop lever are located in the traditional M1911 points on the left side of the frame.
