New Mexico: Two Gun Control Measures Advance Out of Committees; Gun Owner Liability Bill To Be Voted on by New Mexico House Soon
Two NRA-opposed bills advanced from committee at the Roundhouse yesterday in Santa Fe.
House Bill 9 by Rep. Pamela Herndon (D-ABQ), a firearm owner liability bill, was voted out of the House Judiciary Committee on a 7-4 party line vote. The bill creates back-door gun storage requirements by imposing criminal penalties on firearms owners if a third-party minor displays, brandishes or injures someone with their firearm. Senate Bill 116 by Sen. Carrie Hamblen (D-Las Cruces), which discriminates against law-abiding young adults aged 18-20 by prohibiting them from purchasing any semi-automatic firearm and which also bans anyone under the age of 21 from possessing any semi-automatic firearm (with limited exceptions), advanced from the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee on a 6-3 party line vote.
