Following the successes of its Model 12 and 1300-series shotgun designs, Winchester added an entirely new iteration to its stable of imported guns, the Super X Pump, or most simply known as the SXP.

Since its U.S. introduction in 2009, the SXP line has grown each year with extensions that address nuances of the hunting, personal defense or clay-target shooting marketplace—so whether you’re in need of a 3.5” magnum version in 12 gauge with a long barrel, or have an interest in shorter-barreled 20-ga. versions, the SXP line has it covered.

The Winchester SXP 12 gauge sent for American Rifleman‘s review wears synthetic furniture finished in Mossy Oak camouflage. The pump-action comes with an aluminum receiver and steel barrel treated with a Flat Dark Earth Permacote finish that reduces glare and provides exterior protection to the metal’s surface. The gun’s steel magazine and forward sling stud are blued. The SXP offers a rear sling stud molded within the buttstock.

Fitted with a 28″ barrel, this SXP hunting shotgun weighs just under 7 pounds and balances between the hands appropriately. The SXP action was found by our testers to be smooth and fast to operate. Winchester provides three Invector-Plus choke tubes with its SXP shotgun and a simple wrench for swapping tubes. Like all other guns in the SXP lineup, Winchester provides a chrome-plated bore and chamber for increased performance. A ventilated sighting rib comes standard, and the SXP is fitted with TRUGLO’s red-fiber-optic sight.
