Obama’s Surgeon General Clarifies Gun Control Tweet: He’s Still For It

After a long wait on confirmation, Surgeon General Vivek A. Murthy has been sworn in. Murthy’s stance on gun control resulted in the long confirmation. In a tweet in 2012, Murthy stated, “Tired of politicians playing politics w/guns, putting lives at risk b/c they’re scared of [National Rifle Association]. Guns are a health care issue.”

In his first interview since his confirmation, Murthy was asked to explain the meaning of his tweet and his plans for gun control as surgeon general.

Murthy stated:

“Here’s what I meant when I wrote that tweet. Violence of all kinds is a public health issue. When you have large numbers of people dying from preventable causes, that’s a health care issue. That’s a public health issue.”

“I want to find a way that we can reduce violence in America, and I would think you would be hard pressed to find parents or families of victims, or health care practitioners who would disagree.”

Murthy declared last year in Senate confirmation hearings that he would not use his post as Surgeon General to advocate for gun control. However, Murthy evaded a direct question “of whether his focus on guns as a public health issue would lead to more gun control.”

Murthy stated he is calling for “common sense.”

“We may see various issues around violence as highly politicized because of how they’re covered or how they’re spoken about in public settings. These problems that we face are not problems that one party or one sector can solve on their own.”

Gun control advocates, such as Gabrielle Giffords’ group, declared a “win” with the confirmation of Murthy, calling his confirmation a “big step for common sense” and “recognizing what the data makes quite clear: gun violence is a threat to public health.”

Common sense is not so common anymore. For example, it’s better that children go hungry during the school day than providing them foods they will eat, sufficient calories to function, and food that is recognizable and appetizing. This is the mantra of the Michelle Obama school lunch initiative to prevent kids from becoming obese. But, I digress.

“People dying from preventable causes” is a health care issue according to Murthy.

So, people who have “died” or been killed, assaulted or victimized by illegal alien invaders is a health care issue because the cause is preventable. But, one can bet Murthy wouldn’t include illegal immigration as a health care issue despite the fact that infectious diseases, antibiotic resistant illnesses and criminals are crossing our borders unimpeded. It would be “common sense” to halt illegal immigration as people are dying at the hands of illegal alien invaders, which is a preventable cause.

Pretty soon, Americans will not have to worry about deaths from car crashes, despite having seat belts, traffic laws, car seats for infants, etc. Deaths from car crashes are a preventable cause which makes them a health care issue. Cars kill a large number of individuals every year. What kind of “common sense” initiatives are going to be taken to address car deaths? Drivers are already required to obtain a license to drive in order to demonstrate “safety” in operating a vehicle. Should they go through a background check before purchasing a car? Should the amount of gasoline be limited that goes into the tank? How about limiting the number of cars that can be on the highway at one time or the number of cars that can be owned?

“Violence of all kinds is a public health issue,” according to Murthy. If that’s the case, why not just hospitalize and medically treat “violence”? Who is working on a cure for “violence”? Where is the vaccine or “pill” for violence?

Violence is an exertion of physical force with the intent to harm persons, animals or property. There are criminal laws that deal with violence. Violence, perpetrated by people, is a criminal issue. It doesn’t matter what “inanimate” object is used in conjunction with the “exertion of physical force” as the intent is to “harm.”

Since an earthquake, tornado or hurricane perpetrates violence and “violence of all kinds is a public health issue,” how does Murthy mean to keep people from dying to those? Well, implementation of Agenda 21 would get people out of the “danger” areas, mostly, from earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes as people would be packed tightly in major urban hubs probably away from coastal and earthquake prone regions. Earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes probably don’t count when talking about “violence of all kinds”; even though, Murthy proclaimed “violence of all kinds” is a public health issue. One might find his statement confusing when thinking about it. Earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes are not preventable; however, “violence of all kinds is a public health issue.”

Plane crashes are terribly violent, result in large numbers of people dying and are preventable. Didn’t we witness that with Sept. 11, 2001? How are plane crashes to be addressed as a public health issue?

The list could go on to include bridge collapses and structure failures – violent means that kill large numbers of people that are preventable. But, the point is made.

This is how Murthy is “explaining” or “clarifying” a tweet that was perfectly clear. No explanation was necessary. The gun control advocacy groups thought it was perfectly clear and even stated, “now we have a Surgeon General who recognizes what the data makes quite clear; gun violence is a threat to public health.” Being cornered with a direct question regarding “his plans for gun control,” Murthy decided to deflect/obfuscate his clear statement made via Twitter and “broaden” his statement to “violence of all kinds” in an attempt to garner more public support.

Murthy’s stance has not changed despite his attempts to “hide” it. The current Surgeon General is a gun control advocate – period. Regardless of what he said in a Senate confirmation hearing, he will use his position to advance gun control. If this man was not one who would lie openly or try to deceive the public with statement “clarification,” Obama would not have recommended him for the position; birds of a feather, stick together. Congress could have stopped it; but, unfortunately, they are too busy trying to appease the King – especially Republicans.
