A Detroit church service turned tragic today when a man with a brick went after the pastor, but likely didn’t anticipate what would follow: the pastor pulled out a semiautomatic pistol and fatally shot the man, police said.
“They knew each other and had some type of problem before,” Assistant Detroit Police Chief Steve Dolunt said of the pastor and the victim. Â “When I got there, the body had already been moved. The pastor was in custody. We had the gun.”
The shooting happened at about 1:45 p.m., shortly after a 1:30 p.m. service got underway at the City of God storefront church on Grand River Avenue near Lahser, Dolunt said. The man with the brick never actually made it into the church, but went after the pastor in the vestibule, he said.
The pastor, whom Dolunt did not have a name for, responded with gunfire, shooting the man multiple times, including in the chest. The man died a short while later at Botsford Hospital.
It seems that a brick is no match for a Glock. Though the pastor was held in custody, he was released on Monday. Police are investigating allegations that the 36-year-old pastor was committing adultery with the 25-year-old victim’s wife.
Click on Detroit reports, “Those who knew Smith say he was an all-round great guy — a leader on and off the field for the Michigan Lightning football team. Friends say Smith was crushed after announcing on Facebook that his wife was pregnant, only to learn the pastor of his church was the father.”
The Detroit News reports, “In a Sept. 15 post, Smith wrote: ‘That wasn’t my baby that was (his wife) and pastor(‘s) baby.’ That preceded a Sept. 18 rant: ‘This (expletive) got my (expletive) pregnant. Tick tock (expletive) and everybody with you.'”
However, authorities have claimed that the pastor had been trying to help the man, “but those efforts had gone south.”
Mr. Dolunt said that a previous police report had already been filed against the brick wielding man.
“The suspect entered the church, he allegedly had a brick in his hand and was threatening the pastor,” he said. “We’ve had a previous incident, at least one, and the pastor filed a police report.”
Dolunt said that the man has had a history of threatening the pastor, as well as other members of the congregation.
Smith’s younger sister, Deja Ward said that her brother went to City of God Ministry on Grand River near Lahser to get closure with the pastor before pursuing counseling with his wife.
The couple had been living with the pastor previously and Smith considered him a mentor and father figure.
Whatever the issue was here, it’s clear that sin was at the heart of it, whether it was adultery or mere threats against innocent people. Two things are for sure, our sin is never just “personal.” It often affects others; and second the Bible warns, “be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).
