Texas Mother Puts Gun between Herself & Two Would Be Intruders to Protect Son

You know what they say, “Don’t mess with a mama’s babies.” Two would be intruders found this out as they attempted to break into a Texas home and found a mama bear with a gun protecting her son.

April O’Neil, a stay at home mother, recounted the moment her eyes made contact with one of two men who were attempting to break in her home.

“It was this look like, I could read it in his face that he wanted in here and if he got in here, he was going to hurt us,” she said of the incident on Thursday.

Once she saw the men, who had on masks and had apparently jumped the family’s fence and were attempting to break in through the back, she set off the home alarm, grabbed her gun and shoved her three-year-old son into a utility closet, placing herself between the closet and the would be intruders.

“I was pointing the gun at the bigger of the two suspects,” O’Neill said. “Then the bigger of the two guys looked in and he saw that he had a gun being pointed at his face. Then they were gone.”

O’Neil was more concerned with her son’s safety than her own, just like most mothers I know. She was also concerned that her son might see something that he would never get over and so she placed him in the utility closet to protect him from those sights.

Ms. O’Neil spoke soberly about the world we live in and expressed her gratefulness that she has a personal gun, which she was able to use to protect herself and her family.

“We don’t live in a ‘Leave it to Beaver’ world anymore, and a knife and pepper spray isn’t going to take down a 6-foot-4, 6-foot-5 guy down,” she said.

Though O’Neil had cameras around her home, not one of them captured the two men on video. Harris County Sheriff’s Office is asking you to call if you have any information on the would be intruders.

Guns really do save lives. Does anyone actually think that if Ms. O’Neil only looked at these intruders armed with pepper spray or a spatula that they would have tucked tail and run? I don’t think so, and neither does a study commissioned by the Obama administration under his 23 executive orders following Sandy Hook. In 2013, this study determined that firearms used for self-defense are an “important crime deterrent.” That was a $10 million worth of taxpayer money study that I could have given them for free from common sense.

And, by the way, that same study also confirmed that background checks and more rigorous gun laws don’t keep guns out of the hands of criminals. “Most felons report obtaining the majority of their firearms from informal sources,” says the study, while “stolen guns account for only a small percentage of guns used by convicted criminals.”

So, this story has a happy ending all because a mother had her gun and exercised her unalienable right to use it in defense of her and her son’s life. Well done Ms. O’Neil!
